So the other night I had a dream about Sokka and Katara's life before the series started. It's November, and I always start thinking about hunting and survival (I'll be sitting in the woods with a rifle over the Thanksgiving holiday, yay). I grew up hunting, but Sokka and Katara had to do it to live, and that to me is just awesome. As the only man of the village, any of the big hunts would have probably been done by Sokka, and I don't imagine Katara would have let him go off alone. As much as those two don't get along sometimes, you have to admire their relationship.

So, with the images in my head from my dream, I drew this pic up and colored it. And for the first time ever, I actually tried to digitally PAINT the background. I wanted it to look as much like a scene from the series as possible.

What's also cool, is that I didn't need references to draw the characters. I double checked some shots for color and details, but they were drawn straight out of my head, their poses totally created by me. I usually reference, so this was a big step.

And to make this even cooler (like brrrr, that's so cool it's cold!), *Loopy777 totally wrote up a fic to go with this. Check it out -> [link]

Enjoy! :salute:

Really paints a wider picture on two character's whose life's I feel I forgot about.

Growing up in a war torn world, dead mom, dad gone, hunting for food in a cold climate.

Good job. Just good job.

This is amazing. I like the coloring, and the realism in the snow prints. Nice work on the spears too.

Why is Katara so worried? Did she see a vision of her future as Fire Lady to Azul- uh, I mean, as the, uh, mate of.. Well. She's supposed to, like, give birth to an entire nation of Airbenders, so... Yeah. I guess that's the vision she had, because the one with Azul-uh, I mean, someone else, would have made her happy. And warm. She looks freezing. Where are they going?! Imma have to go read that Loopy-fic now. :XD:

I love the cliffs in the background, by the way. Like, want to hang them on my wall and drool over them for the rest of my life.

(I have a thing for mountains and cliffs and.... rocks. :XD:)

Seems like you'd be more into Toph then. ;p Toph and Azula, now there's a pairing, maybe with Sokka bound and gagged in the background. :devilish:

Katara didn't have a vision, you silly sillyhead. :XD: She's just worried because she's following "Sokka's Instincts" and we all know no good can come of that.

How are Toph and Azula more wrong than Katara and Azula? :lmao: I think they'd go good together, two no-nonsense chicks taking on the world together. :XD:

You're too harsh on him: he gets it right sometimes.

But don't tell him that! The last thing we need is for Sokka to develop an ego. :fear:

"How are Toph and Azula more wrong than Katara and Azula?"

I don't know! Because they're not Azutara!? :XD: I can't explain it! I'm just very picky about my couples, and I've never ever imagined Toph in any kind of loving relationship with anyone. She's too independent for that. But Azula needs love, and Katara needs to give love. Perfect match. And did I they're mention elemental opposites? And mortal enemies? The perfect couple! :XD:

"The last thing we need is for Sokka to develop an ego."

Because he sure hasn't got one already. :|

Hey hey, Sokka is a surprisingly humble guy. He knows his limitations (he just doesn't have many :D).

Toph needs love too. :( We independent people may not give that impression, but that doesn't mean we need love any less than mentally scarred psychopaths or prissypants do-gooders. :cling:

Hunting is waiting for a long time with a lot of hard work thrown in at the end. Considering the life of the arctic peoples hunting and spear fishing is their only source of nutrition, which meant that after the war party left, Sokka and Katara had to feed the entire village. No one ever seems to realize just how much work that had to have been. Sokka is always hungry because he has to feed everyone else first.

You did a great job of capturing the personalities of the two characters, and the hard labor involved in feeding a village. The footprints going off into the distance tell a tale all by themselves.

I went to school in the mountains of northern New York State, where the winters would normally hit 40 below. My beard and moustache would be covered in frost on any walk through the woods in those conditions.

Excellent job of capturing the life of an arctic hunter. :D

Well, as you probably learned in your Inuit and Native research, usually the hunters are fed first when food is scarce, to keep their strength up so they can get more food. I think Sokka's just hungry all the time because he's a 15 year old growing boy. :XD: But you're totally right about the effort he and Katara had to have been putting in for the village. Even if some of the women helped with fishing, I'm sure that all the larger game came from Sokka. People joke that Sokka isn't a very good hunter because they never really show his successes in the series, but I say, the fact that the villagers are ALIVE is proof enough of his competency. I'm still not convinced he's a very good fisherman, though.

I too have experienced the joy of having eyebrows, eyelashes, hair and snot frozen to my face. That kind of stuff builds character. :XD:

Glad you enjoyed the pic! I figured if anyone would understand what I was trying to show, it'd be you. :)

Exactly, There is a village of living people. He had to be doing something right for three years.

I'm glad that frost built something other than a very cold face. I'm just glad I had a beard. You must have, and still are, freezing. :)
